Sample Schedule For Daily Physical Activity

Allocating time for daily physical activity takes creative
planning and coordination at the classroom, school and board levels. It
will often be possible to integrate the 20 minutes of sustained
physical activity into physical education classes. On days when this is
possible, additional physical activity is not required. On days when
this is not possible, or when there are no physical education classes,
the 20 minutes of physical activity needs to be incorporated into
regular instructional time. This can be done by taking an equal amount
of time from each of the periods during the day – if there are seven
scheduled periods in a day, decrease each period by 3 minutes to allow
for the necessary 20 minutes in total. Or schools may schedule daily
physical activity at different times each day – during period 1 on
Monday, period 2 on Tuesday, period 3 on Wednesday, and so on. In this
case, allotting time for daily physical activity will only affect any
given period once in each cycle.

The following sample schedule for a junior class illustrates one
possible way of incorporating daily physical activity (DPA) into the
instructional day.
