IF YOU WOULD ONLY LISTEN

If only you would listen,
I’d tell you how I feel
Share my joys, my sorrows,
If only you would hear.

If only you would listen,
I’d tell you how I feel
Share my joys, my sorrows,
If only you would hear…
If only you would listen,
I’d tell you how I feel
Share my joys, my sorrows,
If only you would hear.

But no, your seldom listen.
Before I utter ten short words,
You interrupt . . .
You’ve guessed the rest
And tell it back to me.
Or it reminds you
Of a bigger, better yarn
That you must share,
Immediately.

If only you would listen,
Forego your chance to show
How rich your life has been
In happening,
You’d understand the way I feel
With fascinating stories of my own
Fermenting painfully within.

But you would also learn
What makes me laugh,
And cry,
And disagree with you.
My hopes and dreams
Might make your life richer,
Ideas to spark your soul
And draw you close to me,
If you would only listen.

  1. This is so true of people in general as individuals. People often feel that whatever has happened to them is the most amazing story, and they feel that everyone must want to hear this story. I myself am guilty of this crime too. But along my journey to becoming a teacher I hope that I learn to listen once again, like I did when I used to sit with the adults at the table and take in everything they had to say. Except I’ll have to reverse it, let the children speak and listen to what they have to say.

Thank you for displaying this inspirational poem.

  2. its true people need someone to listen to their stories as a matter of fact it ease the pain they feel. Also they want to share the happines they feel.

  3. it’s really true that as individuals, we need someone who would listen to our different stories in life, our happiness and different feelings that we have. we always need somebody to share with…but sometimes, others don’t have the time to be with us even just for a moment and what hurts the most is that, they are the same person who we need the most….

  4. This poem speaks the truth specially to those people who are (easy and fast).
Fast to judge others and easy to boast themselves that they know everything especially what is good for everybody, not knowing that each person is a unique individual that each have their own story to tell and experiences to share.

Allow me to share this poem to others, I want to share this inspiring poem. Thank you, God bless and Godspeed!!
