Computer Lab Chart for listing animals
Animals in Winter by Henrietta Bancroft
Students will be able to use the computer to research facts about hibernation.
Students will be able to discover facts about animals that hibernate and eat in the winter.
Given some web sites and access to the computer lab, each student will research one
animal, giving five details about what each animal does during hibernation.
The teacher will display some pictures of animals that hibernate. The students will be
asked to ident ify what is alike about all these animals. Lead them to the word Hibernate.
Have this word added to the word wall. Students will then gather together to listen to
Henrietta Bancroft’s book, Animals in Winter. Have students look for animals that
hibernate as the book is read.
A chart will be prepared for students to identify animals from the book that hibernate.
The teacher or students can write the names of the animals on the chart.
Development of Lesson
Students will be told that they are going to do some research today.
They will be using the computer lab or computers in the classroom if there are enough.
They will continue to research animals that hibernate and find at least two of them that
are of interest to them. The students can work in partners to conserve on computers or if
they need partners to assist them. They will be given a time limit for this, depending on
the group’s abilit y. The teacher will gather them together again and share their findings.
After listening to everyone’s research, each group will choose an animal that they would
like to know better. Every group will have a different animal.
The students will go to their computers and find the answers to the following questions
about their animal:
1. What animal are you researching?
2. Where does this animal hibernate?
3. How does this animal eat in winter?
4. How long does this animal hibernate?
5. What happens to this animal’s body during hibernation?
Students will find a picture of this animal and print it. They will take the picture and put
it on a small poster with all the answers to the questions above.
When students have finished their research, they will gather together to share
information. Each group will report on their animal and then post information in the
hallway or classroom on a bulletin board. The teacher will have a large cave drawn on
the bulletin board. The students will put all of their information inside the cave to give
the effect of hibernation.
The teacher will assess the work of the students, using the following rubric.
1. Did the students work cooperatively?
2. Did the students answer all the questions?
3. Was the poster attractively and neat ly done?
