More than 600 Students Participate in Education Plus Summer Camps

Summer camps organized with financial support from the Department of Education have become popular with francophone students in New Brunswick. Education Minister Claude Williams today visited the camp in Notre-Dame-de-Kent, one of 14 in the province.

“These camps allow students to broaden their horizons through educational, recreational and cultural activities,” Williams said. “They are an excellent complement to school activities.”

More than 600 francophone students will participate in one of the camps being held across the province until Aug. 25. Each week-long camp allows students to explore a particular theme, some of which this year include forestry, health, the environment, dramatic and visual arts, photography, engineering, technology, and geology.

“Thematic activities are designed so that the young people can put into practice concepts they’ve learned at school,” Williams said. “In addition to those activities, social and recreational activities allow the students to get to know other young francophones in the province.”

The Education Plus summer camps are free, and target young people in grades 6-11 who attend francophone schools in New Brunswick. The camps are offered in two different categories: one for grades 6-8 students, and the other for grades 9-11 students.

Every year the provincial government provides almost $500,000 to organize the camps.
