In your opinion, should Canada join the United States? What are the dashes used for in paragraph 3? Next Wednesday, questions like these will be facing Grade 10 students across the province, and the Independent Learning Centre’s (ILC) Ask a Teacher service is here to help them prepare!
Ask a Teacher is a free service that provides online tutoring, and extra practice for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) - held province-wide on March 29.
Instead of getting stressed out, students can visit
href="http://www.ilc.org">www.ilc.org and register to use the Ask a Teacher chat rooms, where they connect with real teachers, in real time. Students simply login to a room anonymously, ask a question, and then work one-on-one with a teacher toward the answer by means of text and a virtual whiteboard. Chat rooms are available in all subjects for Grades 9-12. They are open between 5:30 and 9:30 pm, Sunday through Thursday.
Any time day or night, students can visit Ask a Teacher and use the interactive practice questions, which walks them through the grammar and literacy issues covered by the OSSLT, such as spelling, sentence structure, and essay writing. The site is an engaging way for students to learn, assess how ready they are, or review what they know.
“Ask a Teacher is a valuable service because it offers Ontario students the help they need when they encounter difficulties in preparation for the test. For students who may not have access to a private tutor, and for parents who are unable to help, Ask a Teacher is there,” said Sarah Irwin, managing director, ILC.
A new addition to the Ask a Teacher service is the Essay Feedback Tool, which allows Ontario high school students to upload their essays for evaluation by certified Ontario teachers. Essays are e-mailed back to students within 48 hours with helpful comments and suggestions.
